We were starving when we got to Vík. It is the "major town" on the central southern coast. By that, I mean there are 300 inhabitants. That's the wonderful thing about Iceland. It is so sparsely populated. You are constantly at one with nature and not surrounded by crowds of people. Anyways, I forgot to take photos in the town. And unfortunately, by the time we left, it was too late to make a trip to the beach: something I regret because it is supposed to be one of the world's great beaches. But at least we had a chance to eat an "egg burger": a hamburger with a sunnyside-up egg on top.
We drove through the wonderful bleak desolation of the black sand beaches/desert (including a sand storm that pelted our cars) on the way to our hostel located in Hvöll, which has a population made up of just one family who runs the hostel. The hostel was actually quite awesome. We were the only ones there. I took a walk far away onto the black sands. It was a deep introspective feeling to be surrounded by such incredible beauty in silence and isolation, far away from any living creature: just the wind gently blowing. Talk about an existential experience! The following is actually a photo closer to our hostel, looking outward to the distance.
